Biochemical cycles are the repeated movements of chemical elements through living organisms and the environment. Each cycle, such as the carbon or nitrogen cycle, has a distinct path that shows how atoms move from the air, water, and soil into plants and animals and back again. These cycles comprise many linked steps: photosynthesis brings carbon into plants, respiration returns it to the air, and decomposition recycles nutrients. Together, they constitute the planet’s natural system for keeping resources available and life balanced.
