(3) Today China and the United States harvest the greatest amounts of tobacco, although dozens of smaller nations also grow the crop for export. (4) Experts say flue-cured and air-cured tobaccos have distinct aromas. The smell is quite different from one style to the other, helping smokers tell one blend from another. (5) A modern cigarette blend may comprise up to thirty kinds of shredded leaf. Together they contain sugars, oils and tiny particles that guide the final taste. (6) Although pipes and snuff still exist, cigarettes now constitute the majority of tobacco use worldwide. This habit forms a large part of the global market and shapes many public-health debates. (7) Medical studies link heavy tobacco use to lung and heart disease. For that reason, many countries print warning labels and raise taxes to limit consumption.
